A deciduous thorny shrub. Burgundy and yellow foliaged forms add color to the landscape. Yellow flowers in spring. New foliage is rose pink mottled with reddish purple and white. Leaves mature to reddish purple.
Grown for its red to purple leaves with white flecks. Variegation is not evident on first growth of the season. This deciduous shrub has slender, spiny, branches, and small, roundly, oval leaves. Small, yellow flowers borne beneath leaves, from April to May, not showy. Bright red berries can be found along stems from late fall through winter. Ironically, this is never really consided a feature of this plant. Best located in full sun, this plant is tolerant of many types of soil, but will not do well in wet to very moist soils. As name Barberry implies, this makes an excellent hedge or filler shrub. Cannot tolerate waterlogged soil.
